Dear NSFAS-Funded Students,
Herewith is the breakdown of allowances that will be paid out to you for the 2023 academic year:
Learning materials allowances- You will be allocated R5 460, of which R2 730 has already been paid out to you (if you have not received it yet, you fall under the group that was cleared for funding after the payment was made) and the remainder will be paid out during March to accommodate students that have opted in for a laptop.
Living allowance- You will be allocated R15 750 (R1 575 over 10 months, February to October. Two payments shall be made in February and the last payment will be effected 25th October). These will always be advance payments. If you are staying at an on-campus catered residence, your allowance will be broken down as follows: R10 000 will go to your Multi-meal pocket and the remaining R5 750 will go to your Personal Care allowance. This will explain the R575 payments being received by the students staying in on-campus accommodation.
Transport allowance- You will be allocated R7 875 for transport (R787.50 over 10 months). This will also be an advance payment made. This allowance is for the students that are not in on/off-campus accommodation (ie. Living at home/with relatives). Students should expect a delay in these allowances, particularly students that are given accommodation clearance and opt to stay with relatives or at home without informing Financial Aid and Housing department of same.
Students are reminded to take extra precaution regarding the usage of above allowances and NOT share their Intellicard and PIN with anyone, as well as reporting any lost/stolen cards immediately.
Students are further reminded that they shall not be permitted to move from one accommodation/accommodation type to another, without the express permission of Financial Aid via the Housing office.
Lastly, students should inform Housing of where they are residing and to register their accommodation to ensure that the accommodation allowance is charged to NSFAS.
The above communication is in accordance with the 2023 academic year’s NSFAS Funding Guidelines which students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with.
